About Us

Meet the Team

Shropshire Rural has a small team of staff, dedicated to doing the best job they can in support of the Association’s ambitions. We will seek the support of others when we need it: in designing, constructing maintaining and repairing our homes and in the many other aspects of running a housing association. We carefully select who we work with but by keeping our own team small and only seeking help when we need it, we are able to keep our operating costs low. However good the policies, systems and processes, it is a universal truth that ‘people make the difference’. The people making up Shropshire Rural’s staff are:

John Green

Chief Executive

John has recently joined the Association as Chief Executive, bringing over 30 years experience in the housing and charity sectors. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Housing, John began his housing career in Liverpool in the 1980s, gaining experience in housing management and community investment, followed by roles in development and supported housing. In his spare time, John can be found following his football team – Liverpool or playing golf – badly!

Janet Donovan-Mendy

Janet joined SRHA in 2023 and is a member of the Board and Tenant Matters Committee. She has held various management positions in customer service and sales and currently works as an account manager for a feedback company, supporting clients to help them understand customer feedback and improve services.

Janet is immensely proud of her family and the positive influence they have on the lives of others.  Outside of her busy life, she relaxes by tending her garden and walking her dog.

Ray Flynn

Ray joined SRHA in 2023 and is a member of the Board and Development and Finance Committee.

Ray has worked for the University of Wolverhampton since 2012 and is currently Associate Director for Regional Development, with responsibility for the University’s strategy relating to economic development and regeneration.  Prior to this, he held a number of rural regeneration roles.

Away from SRHA and his work, Ray is an avid non-fiction reader and loves watching sport.

Madge Shineton

Madge is currently the longest serving member of SRHA, having joined the Association almost 40 years ago to support the development of socially rented housing in south Shropshire.  She is currently a member of the Development and Finance Committee and previously served on the Board.

Madge is passionate about the provision and maintenance of local services, and served as an Independent Member of Shropshire Council.  She was also Chairman, President and Vice-President of the Shropshire Association of Local Councils.

Away from her voluntary and campaigning activity, Madge is an avid reader and gardener.

Tami Sabanovic

Tami has been a member of SRHA since 2021, initially joining Tenant Matters Committee before being appointed to the Board in 2023. She currently works in local government as Housing Strategy and Development Officer, having previously held various housing and support roles covering homelessness, housing advice and benefits.  She is also a qualified mental health first aider and member of the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Away from work Tami is studying for her level 5 Diploma in Housing, and likes to relax by gardening and walking her rescue dog by the sea.

Matt Smith

Matt joined the Board and Development and Finance Committee of SRHA in 2023, bringing with him a range of expertise including project management, procurement and public subsidy and having worked in the public, private, voluntary and educational sectors.  Matt is currently a Programme Manager for the River Severn Partnership working to improve wireless connectivity in rural areas, building on his success in taking Herefordshire into the top 5 rural areas of the UK in terms of high-speed broadband access.

Alongside, spending time with his family, Matt enjoys making electronic music and playing 5-a-side football.

Heather Kidd

Roger Evans

Steve Price

Steve is a retired senior local government officer, who headed up Shropshire Council’s housing service across the County. Before this he was in charge of the Council’s Environmental Services.  He is a member of the SRHA Development and Finance and Tenant Matters Committees and is also a former Chair of the Board.

Alongside his regular “Grandad duties”, Steve’s spare time is spent as a volunteer Board member of Shropshire Healthwatch. He also keeps himself fit through running and is a member of 2 local running clubs. 

Jane Griffiths

Jane joined SRHA in 2023 and is currently a member of Tenant Matters Committee, where she brings over 25 years of housing experience, supporting communities across Shropshire.  She currently works for a large housing association in Worcestershire, managing a team of Neighbourhood Co-ordinators and Tenancy Enforcement Officers.

Jane is immensely proud of her career in housing as it is an opportunity to make a positive difference to peoples lives.  Away from housing, Jane is a board member of a Credit Union and vice chair of her local community association.  She is also a keen gardener.

Geoff Elner

John Barber

John currently works as a Housing Executive for a housing association, helping over 400 tenants manage their tenancies. Before this he held various housing roles including a period in the repairs team.  John joined SRHA in 2021 and is a member of Tenant Matters Committee, and has achieved a level 4 qualification in housing practice.

Outside of work and his membership of SRHA, John has taken on a number of running challenges and also enjoys walking in Shropshire and other parts of the UK.

Kate Adams

Finance Director

The Association’s Finance Director since July 2017, having previously been the Head of Finance at Shropshire Housing Group, an organisation Kate served for nearly 20 years. Prior to this Kate qualified as a Chartered Accountant , having become interested in the business side of farming whilst completing a degree in Agriculture at Harper Adams University. Away from work, in addition to spending time with her family, Kate enjoys walking the dog, exploring the footpaths around Clun and helping do up their old house.

Annette Hadwen

Scheme Manager

Annette provides housing management and support services; principally to older residents who benefit from her skills, knowledge and experience gained in her current role and with one of the country’s largest providers of specialist accommodation for older people. Originally from Yorkshire, Annette devotes much of her ‘free time’ to her family and, when she can, to travel.

Philip McVeigh

Tenancy Management Officer

Phil McVeigh joined Shropshire Rural Housing Association in March 2019 having worked in social housing since 1990 and is a Corporate Member of the Chartered Institute of Housing.  He started his housing career with Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and has worked primarily in debt recovery but also has experience in dealing with complaints for a number of organisations. Away from work, he is a qualified Scuba diver and has dived all over the world with his favourite dive site being Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands.

Linda Talbot

Housing Officer

Linda has responsibility for letting our homes and for day-to-day management of our tenancies. With a background in supported housing for homeless and vulnerable people prior to joining Shropshire Rural, Linda is now the Association’s longest-serving member of staff, with extensive experience on which to draw. When not serving Shropshire Rural, Linda is generally to be found spending time with her family, enjoying the great outdoors and tending her garden.

Stuart Jobson

Asset Manager

Stuart is the Association’s technical lead, responsible for ensuring Shropshire Rural’s properties are repaired, maintained and improved. Stuart has a background in building construction and particular experience of renewable energy and of adapting homes to meet the needs of those with disabilities. Away from work, Stuart’s interests include historic buildings and building restoration, outdoor activities and travel.

Wendy Wainwright

Administrator

Wendy plays a key role in making the business run smoothly. Providing wide-ranging support to staff, Board and Committee members, Wendy is often perceived as ‘the voice of Shropshire Rural’; answering telephone calls and welcoming visitors to the office. A ‘Lancashire lass’ now well settled in Shrewsbury, Wendy’s activities away from work include being a part-time safety steward at Shrewsbury Town FC and playing bowls competitively.

Sam Hine

Chair of the Association

Sam has been a Board member of SRHA since 2016 becoming Chair in 2020, having previously served as vice chair.  She is also a member of the Development and Finance Committee and Human Resources Committee.  Sam is currently employed as Social Value and Inclusion Manager for a housing association. She previously had a 20 year career in local government, focused on rural regeneration, following which she ran her own community development company.  Sam has supported communities across Shropshire for many years, securing significant funding to deliver and achieve positive outcomes with and for local people.

Away from her paid and volunteer work, Sam is a Shrewsbury Town season ticket holder and relaxes whilst walking her dog.

Katrina Baker, MBE

Vice-Chair of the Association

Katrina is a member of the Board and also chairs the Human Resources Committee.  She joined the Association in 2016.  She is currently employed as a Parish Clerk in Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire and brings considerable experience of local government to SRHA.

During her career in local government, Katrina was responsible for organising Royal visits and other civic events.  She also successfully managed an award winning project to bring services to rural areas, a project that saw her named Clerk of the Year in 2002.  In 2006, she also received the MBE for voluntary service to the local community.

Katrina has been a Poppy Appeal Organiser for 47 years. 

Tom Howard

Board Member

Tom has been a Board member of SRHA since 2016. He also chairs the Development and Finance Committee and sits on the Human Resources Committee.

In his working life, Tom is Communications Business Partner for an international firm of structural consulting engineers.  He brings a range of expertise covering communications, public relations and employee engagement, having previously worked for a health and safety software business and the National House Building Council.  He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

In his spare time, Tom is always busy with his three children and enjoys playing and coaching sport.

Celia Bahrami

Vice-Chair

Celia is a retired senior local government officer, who currently works part time as an exam invigilator.  She joined the Board of SRHA in 2018 and is currently vice chair of the Board and Chair of the Tenant Matters Committee.

As Director of the Shropshire Partnership, Celia led multi-agency teams including police, health, fire and national agencies to rethink local services spanning community safety, domestic abuse and substance misuse.  She has a deep pride and affection for the people and landscape of Shropshire.

Celia is a keen walker but definitely not a fair weather walker as she loves to experience the changing seasons when out and about.

Tracy Payton

Board Member

Tracy joined the Board and Development and Finance Committee of SRHA in 2021, bringing with her over 30 years experience of social housing development working for housing associations and Homes England (formerly Homes and Communities Agency/Housing Corporation).  During her career, she is rightly proud of overseeing the delivery of over 1000 homes across a range of tenures.

Having taken early retirement, Tracy now has more time to spend on her hobbies including gardening, upholstery and decorating.

Rosemary Abbiss

Board Member

Rosemary is a member of the SRHA Board and the Tenant Matters and Human Resources Committees.

Having originally trained as a nursery nurse, Rosemary began working on the family dairy farm in the mid 1970s, where she still manages the office.  Her involvement with SRHA began 20 years ago when, as a member of the local parish council, she worked with the Association to gain planning permission for 6 houses, as a member of a parish council.  This sparked Rosemary’s interest in housing for local people in rural areas.

Rosemary’s involvement in local matters with the parish council also led to her involvement in the publication of a book of local memories and short histories.

Matthew Mead

Board Member

Matthew joined the Board of SRHA in 2018 and is also a member of the Development and Finance Committee.  He works in planning policy, focusing on the infrastructure needed to support development and is passionate about local democracy and involving local communities in decision making.

Away from work, Matthew is a keen runner, taking part in numerous events around the UK.  He is also a music lover and enjoys going to festivals.

Paul Sutton

Board Member

Paul is a chartered surveyor having started his career in quantity surveying and project management.  Paul has acquired a wide range of experience in project delivery encompassing retail, offices, and housing.  Paul has also worked extensively in affordable housing being involved in all aspects of development, asset management, compliance and in-house contracting.  His experience involves affordable housing delivery and has a specialism in community-led delivery.  Paul had a breadth of property knowledge maintaining assets, adding value to existing assets, acquiring and developing land to maximise returns to business, community and customers.  Paul leads his own consultancy, Bratch Consultancy Services Limited providing property and commercial advice to a range of clients in housing, insurance and commercial settings.
